Researchers at the National Institutes of Health have found a correlation between an ingredient found in shampoos and nervous system damage. The experiments were conducted with the brain cells of rats and they show that contact with this ingredient called methylisothiazoline, or MIT, causes neurological damage.

Cosmetics containing phthalates, which are added to make-up, nail polish and other products to keep all the ingredients in the product formula evenly mixed. Look for products that contain n-butyl benzyl phthalate (BBzP) or di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), two common phthalates associated with health problems. Avoid products that contain phthalic acid, phthalic anhydride, phthalic glycols, or any ingredient that starts with or contains the letter combination “phth.” Orly and Revlon are two manufacturers meeting the far safer European standard for cosmetics.
