For those who aren’t familiar with anti-psychotic medications, three of the short-term effects include
Parkinsonian symptoms; a sometimes lethal condition called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome; and
the third is called NIDS (Neuroleptic Induced Deficit Syndrome).

The most important thing of all is realise that there is a very special barrier called the Blood Brain
Barrier. It prevents most things that we eat, or most toxins that we are exposed to, from actually
passing through the blood into the brain tissue. When a medication is made, scientists manipulate
that molecule so that it can get through this barrier. This is a very interesting thing to think about -
what it means to actually be introducing something into the body, which goes around the natural
barrier or avoids the natural defences of the brain.

In 1977, Drs. Vernon Fischer and Hendrick Barner wrote a Letter to the Editor at JAMA, in which they
described the cellular changes associated with cardiomyopathy(enlarged heart) in a patient who had
taken Ritalin for 4 ½ years. A tissue sample was obtained from the patient during open heart surgery.
That biopsy demonstrated abnormal membrane accumulations in the left ventricle.
Curious to know if the Ritalin had played any role in these changes, Fischer later teamed with
Theodore Henderson to conduct animal studies. A causal effect was confirmed. Ritalin in mice and rats
produced the same kinds of membrane proliferation in the heart cells seen previously. These changes
were consistent with the cardiomyopathy observed earlier in the human subject.

Abstract. Evidence from many sources confirms that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
commonly cause or exacerbatea wide range of abnormal mental and behavioral conditions. These
adverse drug reactions include the following overlapping clinical phenomena: a stimulant profile that
ranges from mild agitation to manic psychoses, agitated depression,obsessive preoccupations that
are alien or uncharacteristic of the individual, and akathisia. Each of these reactions can worsen the
individual’s mental condition and can result in suicidality, violence, and other forms of extreme
abnormal behavior. Evidencefor these reactions is found in clinical reports, controlled clinical trials,
and epidemiological studies in children and adults. Recognition of these adverse drug reactions and
withdrawal from the offending drugs can prevent misdiagnosis and the worsening of potentially severe
iatrogenic disorders. These findings also have forensic application in criminal, malpractice, and product
liability cases.

All hypnotic-sedatives, including the minor tranquilizers, are habit forming and addictive and can produce withdrawal symptoms or an abstinence syndrome when they are stopped. In the extreme, the abstinence syndrome can cause life-threatening neurological reactions, including fever, psychosis, and seizures. Less severe withdrawal symptoms include increased heart rate and lowered blood pressure; shakiness; loss of appetite; muscle cramps; impairment of memory, concentration, and orientation; abnormal sounds in the ears and blurred vision; and insomnia, agitation, anxiety, panic, and derealization. Obvious withdrawal symptoms typically last two to four weeks. Subtle ones can last months.

New Drugs, New Problems

Psychiatric drugs are not alone in causing morbidity. In the United States, the fourth highest cause of death after heart disease, cancer and strokes are the adverse drug reactions. They are responsible for over 105,000 deaths per year and affect many more with their sublethal side effects.[i] If one adds improperly prescribed drugs and those taken incorrectly, adverse drug events (ADEs) become the third highest cause of death. A score of drugs licensed by the FDA in the 1990s have been withdrawn for lethal side effects that were noted in clinical trials but not disclosed to prescribers or patients. The recent withdrawal of Vioxx followed thousands of heart attacks and deaths. It was defended as ‘safe’ until two weeks before its withdrawal.

Second Generation Antidepressants and Antipsychotics

Akathisia is a subjective desire to be in constant motion. A manifestation of drug sensitivity, it may
be confused with psychotic agitation, and incorrectly treated by increasing the dose of the offending
medication.
The symptom subsides when the offending medication is discontinued and replaced by another one,
better tolerated by the patient.

The Dark Side of Psychiatry

Biological-psychiatry's official theory describes psychological or personal problems as having a biological origin caused by genetic or chemical 'imbalances' to be corrected by drugs and other interventions like Electro-Convulsive Therapy [ECT] or insulin shock. These widely used but controversial methods in official medicine have been for many years amply invalidated, showing clearly that they are absolutely unscientific, that they tend to alienate patient's rights, are unable to solve the problems presented, are dangerous for one's health, and are submissive to pharmaceutical companies. The need for a drastic reduction in the power of the medical-chemical-industrial lobby is an important task to ensure that all people have the right to positive mental health, and to re-direct science's energies towards therapeutic practices which are focused upon the social and familial systems which are generating the personal suffering, instead of upon erroneous and misguided efforts to eliminate symptoms of social distress generated in individuals.

A Call for Congressional Hearings about Psychiatric Diagnosis

In the fall of 2004, a letter requesting endorsers for a call for Congressional hearings about psychiatric diagnosis went out via email to a small number of individuals and organizations. That letter includes a description of the kinds of harm that can result from simply getting a psychiatric diagnosis, and it also includes the information that psychiatric diagnosis, unlike drugs, is unregulated. The number of people and groups to whom the letter was initially sent was small because this was an initiative that was independent of any group and totally unfunded. The endorsers who came from that emailing are listed here as "original endorsers" and are those to whom the letter was first sent or who received it via forwarding by an original recipient.

Unscientific Depression Screenings and Front Groups Boost SSRI Sales

USA: Prior to the arrival of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants (SSRIs) on the market, depression was estimated to affect only 100 people per million.

And those 100 people per million sought help from a medical professional trained in psychiatry and the treatment of depression.

Since the introduction of SSRIs, rates for depression are now considered to be in the range of 50,000 to 100,000 cases per million, or between a 500 to 1,000 fold increase, according to The Marketization of Depression: The Prescribing of SSRI Antidepressants to Women, by Janet Currie, in the May 2005 journal Women and Health Protection.

Western society is consuming ever larger quantities of prescription drugs and many of these are for psychiatric complaints. Drugs are central to modern psychiatric practice and to much psychiatric thought about the nature and causation of mental disorders. Psychiatry has therefore become an important target for the large and powerful pharmaceutical industry. Drug companies direct lavish advertising and hospitality towards psychiatrists and provide funding for much medical education and some mental health service initiatives. The industry is now heavily involved in the organisation of research into psychiatric drugs and the dissemination of research findings. This raises questions about the scientific objectivity of this research and the extent to which the industry is able to shape the research agenda. Drug companies also provide funds for pro drug patient and carer groups and address advertising or disease promotion campaigns to the general public. They exert influence at a political level through lobbying and direct funding of political bodies including drug regulatory agencies.

Mark's story

Mark was born toxic-sensitive and with many allergies to food, chemical pesticides and pollens. In his early years he was required to wear a mask with a filter on his back to filter air. He also had severe asthma and eczema.

Before this horror journey began over 10 years ago, Mark was a brilliant athlete, top basketball player, very bright student (in the top 1%) and a happy go-lucky teenager when we simply asked for help with a bad reaction that Mark had to some street drugs which he was tricked into taking while on a school camp. When a Dr knknknkn gave him amitriptyline Mark could not even manage to get out of bed. I'd pull him up and he would simply fall back down. As we live in the country, we had our consultation by satellite dish with the doctor in Sydney. I rang this doctor 15 times and he never answered. He was then head of the Children's Hospital.
