BAD COTTON ------GOOD COTTON You think that cotton is NATURAL! Cotton is a natural fibre, but…….just because it states “cotton” it is not always totally natural .There are more chemicals used on cotton then on any other crop! Chemicals are used to grow, harvest and process cotton, they are used to make the fabric ‘easy care’,’ wrinkle free’,’ down proof’, etc. THIS IS BAD COTTON! The environmental effects of the cotton industry are very destructive. The cultivation of cotton is known for its intense application of powerful chemical pesticides and sometimes chemical defoliants. Before being made into fabrics, garments, bed linen, towels etc. the cotton is usually treated with an array of chemicals, which are also used before and after picking of the cotton to clean plant residue out of the cotton. Chemicals are used to treat fabrics for closing the weave, so that feather down and wool do not ‘creep’ through the outer covering material for quilts, also to make fabrics fire resistant and to enable the fabric to take heavy metal and AZO dye. Furthermore clothing and bedlinen is treated with chemicals to make them easy care, non iron, wrinkle free. Descriptions such as ‘handpicked’, ‘green’, and ‘unbleached’ and lately the use of the words “best practice” are often misleading and give no guarantee of an environmentally sound growing of the cotton or the weaving, processing and production of fabrics and garments. Most chemicals applied during growing, processing and ongoing production are permanently in the fabrics and there is growing evidence that these chemicals are affecting our health.
GOOD COTTON = 100% ORGANIC COTTON!
Organic cotton processing uses no such harsh chemicals during cultivation or manufacturing into yarn, fabrics, garments, bedlinen etc. Defoliants are NOT used to reduce the plant matter before, during and after picking of the cotton and are not used to clean the cotton. ‘Organature’ purchase certified* organic cotton fabrics, organic cotton linter and organic cotton clothing from ‘Bo Weevil’ in the Netherlands to manufacture our ‘made in Australia’ bedlinen and bedding range. .*Certified organic by SKAL International. The company Bo Weevil was set up at the end of the 1980’s by organic food wholesalers. These wholesalers wanted to draw attention to the adverse environmental impact of cotton production and impress upon consumers the value of organic products, not only for their own health but also for the health of the planet as well as for the cotton producers. It was the first serious step towards the development and marketing of certified organic cotton and organic cotton textiles. The objects of Bo Weevil are to stimulate, initiate and manage projects in the field of organic fair trade cotton products. Organature will continue this fair trade with the products being offered. Bo Weevil guarantees the ecological production of the cotton and the cotton textiles, with control by SKAL International, an independent and internationally acknowledged inspection and certification body for organic production, using the registered trade mark ‘EKO’ ®.
SKAL carry out a minimum of two inspections per season. Bo Weevil supply the textile industry with baled cotton, linters, yarn, fabrics and finished articles under the registered trademark “ECOTTON” ®. All processing aids and selected means are biodegradable and free of heavy metals, AZO dye, formaldehyde and other harmful substances.
Bo Weevil products are made of 100% cotton from certified organic agriculture (according EEC regulation no. 2092/91) by applying modern science at a sophisticated level to ensure a natural balance, without adding chemical fertilisers and pesticides. The fabric is treated only with selected means which combined with a special mechanical finishing treatment preserves the natural characteristics of the cotton and is kind to the environment.
Fabrics for Organature to manufacture in Australia, and clothing are transported from The Netherlands by air. This rapid method of transport avoids possible contamination by other product in the shipping containers during a long sea passage. The goods come to Organature with thick packaging and labels on the outside warning against contamination of the contents. Air freight assures the receipt of goods within 3-5 days and thus the goods arrive in the purest condition. Organature organic cotton products are not fumigated upon arrival in Australia. Organature do not use chemicals. Organature use wooden buttons and conventional cotton thread, cord, binding and trimmings.
Australian labelling laws permit the use of a percentage of synthetic material, such as polyesters, in a product and the label can state “100% cotton” or “all cotton”. Most quilts and pillows labelled cotton contain polyester mixed with the cotton wadding; some manufacturers use 10% to hold the cotton together and perhaps also to keep the price low. Others use thin polyester lining to be able to manufacture their quilts. The cotton wadding for the Organature quilts and pillows is temporarily produced onto such a lining, a necessary means of production and is then removed before the final product is sewn together.
Organature quilts and pillows are 100% NATURAL ORGANIC COTTON and do not contain these hidden materials. The “Nature” of organic cotton;
After the cotton boll has been picked it is ‘ginned’; a process to remove seeds. This process also removes some of the plant matter. Further processing removes more of the plant particles; it is impossible to remove all. The result is that you may find the odd tiny dark spots in light colour fabrics and irregular dye marks in dyed fabrics. The organic cotton filling in the Organature quilts have only gone through early stages of processing of ‘ginning’ and ‘carding’; Carding being the process of teasing out the baled cotton into ‘fluffed up’ blanket. During this ‘carding’ process a little more of the plant particles are removed. It is impossible to remove all and this results in the dark markings which appear in the quilts and pillows. When purchasing our product it is with the understanding that the client is fully aware of the above “nature” of the product and accepts this as part of the product. |
